I enjoy traveling the state and other scenic areas to photograph scenes that are exceptional and then I can manipulate those photos into what I want to paint on the Computer. The end result is a unique perspective on a wide variety of subjects. Recently I have been experimenting with 3-D relief painting. That being, a carved surface that matches the image and texture on the painting! before that I employ a concept called “inside Out”, which were views from inside structures, looking out at a scene! This received rave reviews and i still have not completed that series. I also have ventured into a series of Small country church paintings that has proved to be quite interesting!
Master Tips
Almost forty years ago I was given a group of tips by my Art Teaching Master. When I say Master, this guy painted the color plates in most of the Bibles we use! The most printed book of All time! And besides the obvious points you make with the guy upstairs, just think of the royalties!
Anyway the guy knew something about Art! These tips changed my painting career and the way I see the world! It’s time that I share them!
If you can master these tips, you will be well on the way and actually ready for the theory of color! Not before!
This is a completely new technique using Acrylic paints, Modeling paste, and (believe it or not) clear silicone adhesive!
Here is the finish painting called ” Bates Motel”. IT is a 16″ x 20″ acrylic, acrylic modeling paste, and clear silicone creation.
It allows the viewer’s imagination to run wild with what you think you see! Or NOT!
As we near that time of the year when All of the cute Ghouls come out, I thought I’d let you in on a artist secret tip! About sixty percent of the painting that you see below was painted with a very rare and hard to find utensil. Hard to find because it lurks in the dark, in your very own kitchen closet! Of course some will have never used it because the handle did not seem to fit their hand and in the world of plastics and nylon and acid dipped and “Swiffers”, you may have a hard time procuring one of these.
Yes, It the everyday common “BROOM-STRAW”!
Used on the short Blunt end, it is great to stIpple in leaves and bushes.
Used on an angle you can hit and drag for larger masses of leaves.
Used on it’s side, as you would a snare drum brush, you get long uneven strand of wheat like reeds.
You can spread the bristles of the broom straw to get even wider coverage or squeeze together, to get an even finer point
Used as a dry brush, you can get the grains of wood highlighted and shadowed.
So go mug Harry Potter and steal his broom and try it!
Here are a few close-ups the see the effect the broom-straw gives you!
Learn contour drawing. Contour Drawing trains the eye to hand coordination. Mount your sketch pad firmly on an easel. Choose you subject and without looking at the pad draw what your eye sees on the paper! That’s right, never look at the pad. Concentrate on the subject, and train the hand to draw what you see!
Grayscale and Millions of Grays. Take a nice piece of water color paper and tape off a one inch by twelve inch window. With a well chosen brush, use India Ink and Water and make a perfect Grayscale! Starting with solid black varying to solid White, at the end, with a Fifty Percent Value dead center. Practice this until you get three in a row. If you get it the first time, then the Smithsonian is waiting for you to be bronzed. Because you are a God!
Learn the Values of Objects. Most humans have lost the ability to distinguish values. We have become lazy, using color as a crutch to distinguish the millions of gray values in this world. Most people today, have lost the ability to see things in values. There are millions of grays out there! Those values of gray make up our lives! Animals supposedly still use this sense. The tip is to pick a subject to paint, any subject that you like! Now paint it in black and white, ONLY! Now you can wash it with ANY color, that you want and it’s still a wonderful painting! Try it with any other color and it doesn’t work! You will learn to see values again! This will open your eyes to a whole new world and train you to see that world in your life!
A recent poll taken by local artists showed that their number one priority was color! The second was truth and honesty! Really strange group! Aside from truth, values have to be number one; you have nothing without them!
When most people go through their day, they live their life as if they were filming a movie with a movie camera. Train your eye to take snapshots of your life, as if it was a single frame camera. That way, when you want to remember that exact moment in time! The people with the movie can’t stop the movie to recall a single frame! This will change your life and how you see it!
Memory is a valuable key to the artist. how you go about memorizing makes a big difference. If you can train yourself to use this still shot camera method, you will remember much more and enable yourself to retain those memories better! By taking Frame by Framed shots of your life and the things you what to paint you will be able to file them away as if in a file cabinet, and go back and pull the file for memory purposes at anytime!
As a personal tip, consume less high fructose corn syrup, your body doesn’t know what to do with it, because it is so complex, your body decides to store it, and you know what that means!
Try living life with NO anger and without any Secrets. Once you accomplish this life is a higher plateau! The better that you live, the better you will paint! Because your mind isn’t cluttered with useless junk and you have the time to think about PAINTING!
Art has been around a long time. It was first used to convey a message of warning or to record history for the next generation by the cave man! There was Art History before Commerce ever came into existence. Don’t get caught up in today’s Commerce of the Arts. Paint for the enjoyment of brush to canvas, not how much money your going to make, or how famous your going be! Enjoy the process, and you’ll be at peace with your Success.
